I bought this pleco for $3. Im just curious as to what kind it is, i was told just a common pleco, what do you think. hes only about 2-3 inch.

Is that a salifin pleco? Hes stressed because i tried to get him out for a hand picture but then he came out of hiding and i had time to get a good pic of his whole body.
 
"common pleco" encompasses about 20 separate species, including the gibby. this is 100% not a gibby. if i had to guess i'd say it is a juvenile p. pardalis with stressed pattern in that picture, also usually labeled as a "common".

Gibby's are typically thrown in the "common" category. They are typically in the "sailfin" category. Which contains p. Gibbiceps, p. Jose, and a few more.
