What is it?

Gibby's are not common plecos... yes, they are as easy to get as commons but that doesn't make them a common.

you are preaching to the choir, i don't refer to any plecos as "common" except when correcting or clarifying bad labels others place on these species. search through these threads and it shouldn't be too hard to find people labelling gibbys as "common". usually most of the pterygoplichthys and hypostomus species are just referred to as "common", although many of them are extremely hard to find.

A pterygoplichthys pardalis, pterygoplichthys disjunctivus and a hypostomus plecostomus are accepted worldwide by any fish keeper with basic knowledge as commons.

The problem is those that don't know much. They don't need to be confused by someone labeling Gibby's, Rhinos and L001's as commons.

look, i am agreeing with you so this is kind of pointless. a few years ago the hypostomus plecostomus was considered to be the "common" pleco and p. disjunctivus and pardalis were not so much. for the sake of this forum, where people are not experts on these species, the gibbys and p. joselimaianus are also lumped into the label of "common" by members here; as well as most other pterygoplichthys and hypostomus species with a brownish grey color that aren't identified by the exact name or L number. i don't agree with that identification, even for the p. disjunctivus or pardalis because they are 2 completely separate species and shouldn't be referred to as a "common" when someone is looking for an ID.

I understand that you understand what the plecos are. I'm sorry if you felt I was questioning your knowledge. The point I'm trying to make is the same reason I help ID fish here and that is to help 'educate' those that don't know to be able to tell what the difference is. The more people can understand at our level...the better.
