Monster to me means that only a few people have a tank big enough to keep the fish. Fish like Paroon Sharks, Arapima Gigas, Gars and anything else that gets to a Monster size.

The word Monster when used in the hobby, can mean many different things... for example; Mean, Aggressive, Territorial, Carnivorous, Rare, Exotic, Large, XLarge, XXLarge!, Etc. :)

Wile I like big I will settle for mean, also I once had a candiru cat about four inches long that I kept in a one gallon pickle jar. In the wild they feed by vamparizing the gills of larger fish and sometimes enter the uretheras of mammals such as people. When they are in there they erect thier spines and feed on the blood. The only way to remove the is to chase then up into the bladder and then do surgery. They are native to the amazon basin. I think they qualify as monsters. In cold water tanks you can keep Pacific lampreys, they need a good water flow but eat just about any meat item and get about 3' long. They are escape artists and will latch onto you if you get careless while cleaning your tank. They should qualify not only on size but also on sheer yuck factor.

jesus christ, i had no idea people actually kept those things. what fate befell your specimen? what was its growth rate like, and what did you feed it? was it hard getting it to feed?

I gave it to an epidemialogist who kept it for 2 years when it died, he put it in formalin. It ate raw chicken liver, tubifex and blackworms, and brine shrimp, no problem. It only got to 5". I think that is about max. So, monster or not?

If you want one the last place I heard of in the states was univesity of Maryland, otherwise have your local college get with Brazilian dept. ed. I was given mine by an A.F. doctor.
