I don't want to take it to anyone's personal level, but I really don't like them as aquarium fish. In south florida, peacock bass are running rampant throughout canals and lakes and eat all the natives. That being said, the state of florida protects them even though they're non-native! I believe fwc released them to eat the other non-native fish including tilapia that eat the natives. But they also eat the natives that the other non-natives eat! I find them a powerful fish on the line especially when they are parents. But what do you guys find interesting in the peacock bass for the aquarium?

Why are they protected in florida? Because they are a game fish? Kinda how I feel about wild horses here in nevada.....negatively affects all the natives and they shouldn't even be here

They're big, colourful, predatory, have interesting behaviour.. etc.. I don't keep any but if you really are a monsterfishkeeper you must see what makes them popular?!

Empy, they're protected because they're supposedly pest control for other non-natives.

You can't beat them...big colorful fish that don't hide, gives you a shower at feeding time, not overly aggressive. They are the perfect show fish,I'm partial to the Kelberi chicla.

Krichardson, I guess you're right on that. But you need a fairly large tank for them. If you'd like, I could get you dozens of juvie monoculus because they're out there right now.

Oh yeah,of course a large tank is needed...that's well understood with the serious cichla keepers.Just browse the peacock bass media lounge to see their awesome set ups. Thanks for the offer but I am only into the kelberi species of peacock bass as I already mentioned earlier.
