What is the best cichlid fish food pellets and flakes?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Says it was just updated 6/29/16...I was actually waiting for you to post ... South American Geos and severums what would you personally feed ....that is what I was interested in asking but why not bring a great thread up also

NLS is the best IMO, Hikari is good as well. These are the only two dried products I use.. Otherwise I mostly feed frozen foods and live.

Market shrimp, tilapia, mussels, bloodworms, ghost shrimp, guppies, earthworms, gut loaded crickets and boiled veggies.

Feeding this^ tops any dried food

I'm not a scientist with any special professional training. I've read several of these long threads here, and some of RD's posted documents.

I'm not a particularly experienced aquarist, either. I have big tank, and I've raised most species of Vieja to adult size and color.

I feed NLS almost exclusively because although there's considerable debate over whether its the best, NO ONE seriously maintains that it's not high quality. Same for Hikari.

I also feed Freeze Dried Krill from Ken's, and sometimes FDK from Tetra, too.

I quit feeding fresh veggies because it's a mess in the tank.

The ONLY problem I have with NLS is half of it floats and gets washed over the weir. So, I put it in a cup of water and swirl it around for 2-3 seconds before dumping it in the tank.

Regardless of when the last update was performed, info is incorrect. As an example, here's what the expert has to say on one of the first links that I clicked on.

While this does not mean these foods are poor quality (read the ingredients list will say more here), this does speak to the fact you are likely dealing with a company that places costs over quality, which of course if sold at discounters such as Amazon, Dr. F & S, this is important.

Here is just one example using "New Life Spectrum Fish Foods" which although a good food, follows this generic base formula to meet prices points and then sell to mass marketers such as Amazon (one cannot make a top quality fish food and meet prices points)

This knuckle head has no idea what he is talking about. ZERO. Just another ignoramus that would be best served by keeping his fact less ridiculous comments to himself. I could explain his ignorance in detail, but out of respect to the manufacturer I'm not going to. Suffice to say he is talking out of his ass.

Further, on this same page the author uses ingredient lists for NLS that are over 10 yrs old. Doh!

This isn't the first time I have read this authors various website info, some good solid info, that is unfortunately also scattered with some total nonsense throughout.

..........................................................

For Geos any high quality sinking pellet, most Geos (especially the true sifters) prefer smaller bite sizes, that's the real key. IMO, NLS & NF are heads and shoulders above the rest of the dry foods currently on the market. If you can't decide which one is better, rotate both. Done deal.

You can tell RD isn't totally blind and biased like some people want to believe he is because he was a promoter of NLS. When he can say that a food is on the tier/level of the food he backs up... You know he isn't just about promoting NLS and talking down on all other brands. That being said I feed mainly NLS. Northfin is a Canadian brand and much more difficult to aquire here in the states. If I get a chance I will try out Northfin. Though NLS is my #1 choice.

But I have not tried it myself I have been using ..hikari for now but last tank I had was blood worms ,beefheart and some omega but that was over 15 years ago....oh and black and white worms

Seen it on offer here. I feed mostly bloodworm to my 2 african knives and Tetra Prima to my pinktail. I am still working on coaxing food into my featherfin cat. As long as food food is nutritionally sound i will feed it
