If you buy one a Nikon that has the internal motor, such as the D50, the will work with older AF lenses as well.

Thats a good point, this can save you tons of cash.
Same thing with Canon and their EF lenses, Canon Rebel XS XT XSi series can use both EF and EF-S lenses.

Uwe, a member here, shoots his crazy bichir collection with a pentax. A couple of guys on aquatic-photography.com shoot with pentax.

A friend of mine has the k1000 and regrets buying it. It takes nice pictures but the build quality is crap. His hot shoe broke off the camera. The hot shoe attachment on his flash broke. He treats his gear very gently. But cheap plastic and some design flaws led to his gear breaking just from normal use. He's eating the loss and switching to Nikon.

I'll say what I tell everyone else. Go into a pro camera shop, and handle both the nikons and canons. You will quickly figure out which has the best feel. Canon and Nikon are now so equal, it's really a tough choice. But at the end of the day, if the camera doesn't feel right in your hands, you won't take good pics. Once you know which model feels right, then go looking on line for deals on it.

Best Advise :headbang2

I did tons of research on DSLR's for a long time. I was sold on Nikon, went to the store walked out with a Canon.

I'd definitely go with either the Canon XS or the Nikon D3000 (I don't really trust other brands, the lower prices make me suspicious of their quality). I got my first dslr a few weeks ago and had to choose between the two, and after doing a couple months of research, I chose the D3000. It really just depends on which you prefer personally. The two differences that stood out the most to me was that the Canon XS has an option to use the LCD as a viewfinder whereas with the d3000 you can only use the viewfinder, but the d3000 has a "Guide" mode, which basically holds your hand through the transition between P&S and DSLR photography that the Canon XS lacks. Not having use of the LCD while shooting took some getting used to, but after a while it feels more natural and easy to use (although I've found it to be more difficult to set an appropriate whitebalance without being able to see how your changes are affecting the picture until you actually take the pic).

Thanx alot of good advice. I was seriously considering the Pentax I was almost sold on it as a matter of fact. I had no idea it was so fragile and that's important. Who wants a camera that takes nice pictures, but isn't durable enough to last. Guess I'll be going with a Canon or Nikon. Though which model is best. Entry level DSLR's seem to come out every year don't know which to choose. So I still need help at least narrowing my search. So still I ask please some more help.

as stated many times, there is no "best" entry level camera, theyre all so alike these days it basically boils down to which one you like best and which menus/settings you feel more comfortable going through.

im happy with my used D80 and 50mm prime lens $400.00 took the pic of the 1.5" dat in my avatar.

You avatar is about 100 pixels wide. A $50 P&S or a $5000 full frame DSLR wouldn't look any different at that size.

Leaning more toward Canon Rebel, but which is the best right now of the series?

The T1i and T2i are the more recent models, but they are $700 and $900 new. The XS and XSi are cheaper but are more than two years old.

I suggest going to best buy or another electronics store and seeing how the two brands feel.
