Go online and get the most recent water report for your area. Warning; it may be scary and cause you to spend money on a water purifier. I read my water report and now drink bottled spring water. I'm not sure if this is related, but I lost a cat to a lung tumor at two years of age and my dog died last week at only 8 years. The dog was loaded with tumors.

Also use Google Earth or MS Virtual Earth and count the number of waste treatment plants up river. I found 12 waste treatment plants and a nuclear power plant 50 miles upriver. The water authority also pumps water from an abandoned coal mine for six months out of the year to increase the water flow to the nuclear plant.

What you discover may help you decide how you want to treat your water. I use Prime but it doesn't remove most of the "stuff" in my water. I am real close to investing in an RO/DI system.
