What is the best way to cure CL's from ich???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Table salt or aquarium salt is the same thing, and iodized or non-iodized doesn't matter either (contrary to wide spread opinion). There's 3 tsp in a TBS so 30 tsp for a 10 g tank is 1 TBS per gal. That's the high end of the dosing but it's sure to eradicate ich. I know many many people who use it at that dose safely although I've always dosed it at 2 TBS/5 g of water which is a slightly lesser amount of salt. I've dosed Corys, plecs (fancy and plain), cichlids, all kind of Gouramis & Tetras and then of course-Loaches. The very 1st time I used salt was on a batch of big Loaches I'd bought and I was so thrilled it worked! I'd lost batch after batch of Clown Loaches using ich meds.
Be extra sure to read though what Lupin wrote and make sure you understand it. And dose the salt slowly over several days like he explained in his post.
(I edited the 3 tsp=1 TBS part so it was accurate).

Do you use a salt water testing kit or do you think I can get away with not using one and just adding salt per gallon

You just need to monitor properly the water volume you changed so you can redose exactly the same amount of salt per water volume changed or you'll need a logbook for that instead.

Oops, I didn't get back in time to answer you. But yea-like he said (Lupin has forgotten more than I'll ever know about fish disease).

Well I did the salt treatment last night and came up 10 tbsp short on the salt,But when I added it about 10-15 min later my SAE and my coryies were going nuts so I did a 40% W/C and reapplied the rid ick, I looked this morning and the SAE are doing fine now but one of my coryies doesn't look like he is going to make he is real lazy with no energy.I hope the Formaldehyde and Malachite green work that is the main ingred and it says its safer on scaleless fish like loaches and catfish.

Did you re-read Lupin's post like I told you to? ( Don't meant to sound bossy, it just comes out that way). It doesn't sound like you dosed it over a 36 hr period like in Lupin's post or you wouldn't have gotten it done last night. Because 1/3 of the total amount of salt wouldn't have affected the fish in any way at all.
I do wish you luck with the Rid Ich. I've killed more than my share of Loaches and Corys both with that stuff.

Yeah I just quickly scanned over it again last night but of course missed that portion, Thanks for that info I will go out to day and get more salt and try it again Thanks

I really do feel for you. Your frustration level must be pretty high right now. Just go slow and have faith that it'll work. If you're more comfortable with the 2 TBS/5 g water that I use then do that. I use that plus 87 degree in addition to Prazi Pro for a 2 wk quarantine period when I get new fish from any fish shop.
