What is the biggest fish I could keep in a 200L tank?

I would rarely trust pet shop advice, even from a fish-specific store. It is always better to do your own research.

200 liters? I'd say a cichlid that grows to 20-30cm. Here's options:

Green Terror
Cuban Cichlid
Texas Cichlid
Red Terror Cichlid

Keep in mind in a 200l aquarium, you can only keep one of these with no other animals, some of these options may even be pushing it a little. If you want to keep monster fish, I recommend a larger tank.
If you have any fish in mind, you can ask if it could do well in your tank.

Very true, one time an LFS employee told me and my dad we could keep a goldfish in a 10 gallon. It was a long argument to convince my dad the employee was wrong lol

Others have already picked up on this poor stocking advice. Although you recommend only one fish for that tank, a 200 litre is still too small for any of those fish long term.

The advice in this thread is aimed at an impressionable 14 year old so it is only correct that we sway them away from any of those four cichlids.

Get some Pygmy perch and empires brother. Go down the local creek and catch some Galaxias pick up some Murray rainbows and you got a decent coldwater native tank. Moggies would murk anything in the tank they don’t like. If you wanna do tropics grabs some rainbows, empires, some perchlets and you’ll be sweet. Check out ANGFA for natives. Not really. Full-sized perch and grunters are out, but you can do pygmy perch even in numbers. There are dozens of suitable catfish, the issue is that most of them are South American, you're in Australia, and they've got very strict animal import laws over there (and for good reason). If striped raphaels go for 250 AUD, I dread to think what cactus plecos are sold for.

You do have the advantage of some really unique native fish. I'd keep something like mouth almighty or that one endangered gudgeon you've got there, if I were in your place.


Altolamprologus compressiceps is as close as it gets, and will fit a 120 x 45 cm tank. Not what I'd call peaceful, but maybe a pair would do.

Nah almighty would swallow pretty much everything in the tank. Never seen a Raph go for 250. More like 50-80 max. Cactus plecos are in the hundreds.
Southern purpled spots are aggressive as and if he wants to Cohab stuff it won’t be a good mix, although I kept one with a red claw for several years.

Most of the fish stores here are proper hobbies stores. Not a big market so the people who do it are in it because they like it. New life is a good shop as well. Big importer
