Black diamond blasting sand is what its called

Wouldn't really recommend that mate. If you did a little search on the internet, those substrate has been known to create havoc in tank parameters and cause fish death. Go with black quartz sand, the finer the better.

never heard anything bad about the blasting sand.... obviously it is working for "thetankmates" says hes got it in all his tanks. I know its not good for ray tanks.... to sharp for their undersides.. other than that never heard anything bad about it. I think some peopleare just scared of using stuff that is not "specally made" for aquariums.

What is "Black Beauty" sand? Is it filled with metals?

It is a bunch of metal oxides leftover from iron slag and some of the cheaper stuff can have small bits iron in it that if get sucked into your filter will stick to the impeller. Black Beauty brand is supposedly clean and is used throughout the hobby search around.

Never had issues with it I did read its harmful on fish like synodotis however my decorus never had any issues and he was 9 inches plus. Ive raised a gibbiceps plec from 1 inch to now 5 inches I have my cuban pair over it.I am growing out a rhino plec and a bushy nose on it keeping angels over it and its also in my polleni's tanks. I have my 135 with my dat and two red hump eartheaters that are breeding (my female is holding right now and my males colors have really came in) and sifting through it. Ive got no issues with water quality and all fish are eating and growing fast. I also know that one of the company's that sells blasting sand markets it as a substrate for aquariums. I was also told never to use play sand but I used it for over 10 years until I found this stuff a while ago.

Thanks yeah i did research it first and saw that some said their catfish barbels were worn down then I met a cory breeder that uses it exclusively as well.

I also Heard the Horror Stories of "It will Shred your hands if your messing around with it" But I've hand my hands in it While Cleaning the sand in Buckets, I've done tank maintenance, there are no scratches on my glass, Etc.

spectraquartz is supposed to be identical to 3m colorquartz, and I really like my colorquartz. very smooth too. my cories have been digging in it for 5 years with no barbel troubles.great for digging fish, plants too.
