I don't understand the fascination people have with hybridizing fish. Someone please chime in whether you are for it or against it. I don't get it. With dogs, people want pure breds, and the "muts" usually end up at the pound. In the fish world, everyone seems to want the "muts". I don't understand it... I can only imagine in 50 years going to the LFS and EVERY single tank is going to say "assorted cichlids". How are you supposed to research information on fish if you have no idea what it is? Sounds like too much breeding irresponsibility if you ask me.

they way i see it as long as your honest about hybridizing your fish and not selling it to people as pure strains then good for you.

See... that's the kind of irresponsibility I'm talking about.

Let's say you are honest about the "hybrid" you create and sell it to someone else. And then they hybridize it with another fish and sell the fry. And then someone else hybridizes those with other fish. Now people are hybridizing hybrids with hybrids!! There are no names for these fish, because you don't know what species of fish are in them. Do people not see the HUGE problem this is causing??

its called a _x_x_ fill in the blanks

this is just going to start arguments...i smell deletion.

If you don't like hybrids, then don't buy them. Just let the rest of us do our own thing. Live and let live.

I'm just expressing my opinion... I'm not attacking anyone or singling anyone out or anything like that... you are more than welcome to share your opinion too. In fact, I want people to share their opinions since this is such a hot topic these days. It's not so much the actual hybridizing that I see is a problem, it's the selling them. I just don't want all the LFS to turn into "the city pound" of fish in given time.

I think its fine, the fish most often are kept in home aquariums, so I see no harm done, If they start getting released to lakes and rivers then maybe...

That's a whole different topic. Florida is ridden with all kinds of invasive species now because people release their fish into the wild. It's not just hybrids... pretty much any aquarium fish you can think of can be found in streams and lakes of FL.

exactly. theres no need for this thread.
nobody who is looking for pure stock is going to go to pet store or lfs to get their livestock, they will get them wild caught.

most of the time you can tell if a hybrid is a hybrid. not really mass confusion about it because as far as most people are concerned a hybrid is a hybrid doesnt matter what's in it or what generation. if you dont want a hybrid dont buy anything except for wild caught fish just to be safe.

just my personal opinion and by posting it im going against a lot of my personal mfk posting beliefs. :)
