exactly. theres no need for this thread.
nobody who is looking for pure stock is going to go to pet store or lfs to get their livestock, they will get them wild caught.

most of the time you can tell if a hybrid is a hybrid. not really mass confusion about it because as far as most people are concerned a hybrid is a hybrid doesnt matter what's in it or what generation. if you dont want a hybrid dont buy anything except for wild caught fish just to be safe.

just my personal opinion and by posting it im going against a lot of my personal mfk posting beliefs. :)

That's a very valid point, but if you are going to buy a hybrid don't you at least want to know species are in it so you can know general information about it, like how large it will roughly get, what it will roughly look like, what type of compatibility it would have with other fish, etc etc?

I think hybridizing is fine. Even in the wild, fish crossbreed.

We the hobbyist hybrid these fish together to get prettier fish.

It's nice to see a debate with reason and without flaming. I don't care if a fish is pure or not, and I really enjoy certain hybrids. At least I'm not plucking them out of their natural habitat.

I'm just expressing my opinion... I'm not attacking anyone or singling anyone out or anything like that... you are more than welcome to share your opinion too. In fact, I want people to share their opinions since this is such a hot topic these days. It's not so much the actual hybridizing that I see is a problem, it's the selling them. I just don't want all the LFS to turn into "the city pound" of fish in given time.

Like you originally stated, lots of people love and will pay top $$ for a hybrid fish unlike hybrid dogs, hence LFS will never turn into the city of pound for the fish. If there's little or no demand for hybrid fish, LFS will simply stop carrying them. But I doubt it will be happening due to high demand.

See... that's the kind of irresponsibility I'm talking about.

Let's say you are honest about the "hybrid" you create and sell it to someone else. And then they hybridize it with another fish and sell the fry. And then someone else hybridizes those with other fish. Now people are hybridizing hybrids with hybrids!! There are no names for these fish, because you don't know what species of fish are in them. Do people not see the HUGE problem this is causing??

Um, correct me if I am wrong, but if the Hybrid can reproduce, then it wasn't really a different species...

This is nothing like dogs. All dogs are man-made. There is no real "mutt" if you think about it. What you are suggesting is similar to us crossing a wolf with a hyena.

Now, back to what you were saying about the hybridized hybrids. I took it to mean that if they can do that, then they weren't 2 different species.

Once again, correct me if I am wrong. Can a TSN x RTC reproduce?

i keep and breed hybrids for a couple reasons.

1. i've been keeping cichlids for numerous years, and quite frankly i'm tired of drab, dull looking fish. with flowerhorns and other hybrids, everyone is different. ppl can say what they will about "with over 2,000+ species of cichlids in the world, why do we need hybrids" deal. now, you know as well as me this a blasphemous and there isn't freaking 2,000+ different species avail to the average hobbiest.

2. i have a big problem with WC cichlids. i do not promote collecting from wild, unless it is in florida or hawaii or any other state that has evasive species that are not naturally where those cichlids are from.

3. it is fascinating how genetics works. for me learning about what comes from what is awesome. experimentations will continue in my household. because it is so interesting.

this will always be a two sided hobby, unfortunately. if you don't like hybrids then don't buy them. simple as that. in my eyes it don't matter who says what about them, i will be keeping them, and i will be breeding them, and i will probably be selling them.

one man's food is another man's poison :)

honestly, i have never been interested in Fh, but after i got 1 , i could not stop myself from getting some more..and more ..u can guess where this is leading :D

its a personal choice according to me :)... i like Fh but dont quite fancy parrots x fh.... but then again..thats just me :)

I think hybrids are fine! :) As long as the fish is well, healthy and that no major problems result from the hybriding.
The only aspect I hate of hybridizing is when people willingly and consiously create "Frankenstein's creatures" that have severe deformities that impair their lives and that are frankly creepy looking!

I mean, I know they can have their charms but... common this can get so ridiculous!

These guys can only see upwards and their eye bubble pop so easily...

That's like... two fish in one!

And how does THAT even manage to stay alive?

Looks like its got serious dropsy, bloating, and bladder disease!

Thanks for all the input guys... I'm not trying to turn any fish keepers against each other. Just trying to get some input from every angle of the topic. We are all entitled to our own opinion and I was just curious as to what all those opinions were. Although yes some hybrids can be both healthy and beautiful fish, the "Frankenstein's creatures" like Albel was talking about are just down right cruel to fish and uncalled for.
