I really like the little guys. Do they use oxygen or what? also free puffer/loach food!
So why do people NOT want snails in their tank?

The only downside I have heard about MTS is that they can reproduce VERY readily and because of the spiral shape of their shell, they are too tough for alot of fish to eat.

I love them, they make good loach food. A lot of people do have them overrun their tanks, because they do reproduce readily. They do however churn the substrate. There really aren't any negative effects, other than them covering everything in your tank.

A bad thing is the waste if the numbers get too many.
I know my pond snails crap A LOT.
I had around 10 in a cup(little experiment, don't ask) and after one day the whole bottom was covered in waste.
If you keep their numbers in check, then there isn't any bad part, they keep your tank clean while looking awesome :]

couldn't you just get 5 males? XD
jk, what I meant to type was are there any snails that don't breed so readily?

if you were breeding egglaying fish they'd probably eat the eggs, but thats kind of a specialized situation.
