what is the effect of alcohol on fish?

in some forms of fish euthanasia, the fish is put to sleep with clover oil and then kept in a deep sleep with alcohol such as vodka. The fish is then put in a freezer to kill it. If dosed high enough however, the alcohol could potentially kill it, yes.
What about the practice of adding vodka directly to the tank for anaerobic culture enhancement? Is it just a trace amount or what?
I had a friend who threw a party and had another friend poor a bottle of liqour in here tank of damselfish. She came back later in the night and they were all dead. I wonder what alcohol literally does to fish...
Don't know sampster5000 but if that idiot friend poured some vodka in my tank I'd open up a can of whoopass Unites States Marine Corps style.
I imagine the alcohol would cause gill damage and eventual suffocation. I doubt the fish would actually get drunk since the amount of alcohol to get a fish drunk would probably kill it by suffocation first.
As a stupid young teenager I put a goldfish into a cup of rubbing alcohol. The fish spewed a spit-like substance from it gills and died very quickly. All that was left was the fish covered in goo. I imagine it removes the slime coat as well, I can't see it being good in any way.
