EBJD's. They always die out of nowhere.

I hope I don't experience the same problem you have, I just brought a 1 " EBJD. I have had him for two days, so far so good...

IMO the hardest cichlid to keep is Black Nasty, Beani, and Flower Horn.

Vieja Argentea and Beani Ive kept and currently keep alot of the viejas although theyve been reclassified I think anyway argentea Ive tried 3 separate times and always :p theyre all kaput

Blue rams are easy,

just have to know ...

temps must be above 84 degrees or higher, not a joke, this is important...
dont do water changes with tap water, get a carbon filter or let water sit for a few days...
no salt, salt products, ph down/up, really no chemicals at all.
plants help....
and water hardness is alot more important to worry about ph is not an issue...
these guys are raise in ponds here in florida and deal with ph fluctuations daily.

I'm surprised by so many people having trouble with angels, they are my starter cichlid and have not had a problem. Even the one the LFS gave me for free cause he had a broken dorsal fin is fine other than a little scarring. Don't know why mine have been so healthy. Every time I've tried a gourami though...
Oh well, I'm about to dip my feet in and see if I can handle a pair of firemouth.

I've tried and failed multiple times with both beani and haitiensis. I find that the stress of growing out in small specific groups is too great even though I've seen others succeed where I've failed.
Another species that I failed with miserably was H. labiatus 'yellow'. I acquired a wild pair that had issues from the gate. I never got them to eat and they didn't last long but they were so ridiculously beautiful that I would certainly do them again. If there's a next time for them it will be a 6' biotope tank. Great looking fish!
