In fish-keeping, that is.

I'm 17. I have no job, which means no money. I'm saving to finish stocking my 100 gallon, and it's going to cost me around $100...I'm almost halfway there, I've saved around $45...And then this evening I walked into my room to see that, of course, my heater broke. It somehow got water and gross brown stuff inside of it. So there goes my savings towards more Geophagus.

My 35 gallon had a 40&30 gallon filters on it...a month or two ago, the 30g filter burnt out, now I think the 40 is starting to die, too.

So, I want to know that I'm not the only one that is having bad luck in this hobby! It's starting to make me feel sad and discouraged ):

What's the latest bad luck you've had?

I havnt really had bad luck in this hobby I dnt kno if this will count but these Planaria worm outbreaks r my bad luck I had got rid of them completly when I 1st saw them now they have came back even wen I have cut back on feeding and treating they still came back! Its frustrating lol

With the blessings of above...nothing has gone really bad yet...besides my tanks having a bit of high nitrate.

Do not feel discouraged, your still young, ups and downs are part of life.

I would suggest you keep giving your best to find a job...maybe get a pair of demanded fish in your area and try making some money of breeding.

Many of my mates get pretty decent money breeding fish..mostly flowerhorns due to the commercial aspect of it and high demand...easy to breed.

If you want a bit more of return...and confident with your water keeping abilities..discus is also a good breeding income maker.

I remember before you talked about buying second hand things... Maybe the products you purchased are very old. About your heater...i hope you turn it of when doing water changes...and substrate such as sand can kill filters pretty quick...if not handled corrrctly when cleaning.

I hope you continue fish keeping...get a small part time job...and do what you enjoy the.most...fish keeping!! P.S. Study hard so you get a kick ass job and have 1000000 gallon aquariums in the future haha!

I ordered three heaters from overseas, two broke on the way. :( Now my fish are still cold, and need something soon (yes it's winter here in the Aussielands).

My previous heater also broke a few weeks back, and my two bullrouts died.

I got a carpintis that is the prettiest thing ever, but it cannot live with any other cichlid. Either it gets chased, or it chases. :/

A couple months ago I ordered 80 pcs. Of stock from overseas. All but 1 were DOA. Vendor only replaced half. More recently I had a connection to buy wholesale here in the states. Been saving so I can meet their minimum order requirement, And when I'm finally ready to make first order. They find out that I'm not a retailer and close my account with them... devastated!!!

1) Balasts and bulbs burnt out on my coralife light fixture (would have been $90+ to replace). So I ordered a whole new light since it would be cheaper.

2) Received my new light broken from shipping, and the place I ordered it from was refusing to do anything about it, so I had to file chargebacks and go out of my way to get my money back. Eventually, I got my money back and ordered a new one from someone else.

3) Heater on my 55 stuck on (broke). I've ordered a new one, but it's not supposed to be here until Thursday next week, so I've been unplugging and plugging it back in to keep my tank relatively heated.

4) My Haitiensis has decided he's going to try his best to break his heater. So I ordered a titanium heater to go in his tank, and his will go in the 55. I'm just hoping that heater doesn't break before the titanium one goes in.

5) All of my gouramis in my 30 gallon died. No other fish.....Just gouramis. Tested all water parameters, disected the fish.....found nothing. I hate gouramis, and I never have any luck with those stupid fish. They were all fine and eating in the morning, and all dead in the afternoon. I think we have some bad strains around here or something.

6) My Hait figured out how to put sand in his mouth and spit it into his filter intakes. He seized up the motor on one of the AC110's last night, and I had to tear it apart and clean out the impeller. Luckily it still works after a good cleaning, but that motor was very hot, and a few more minutes, and it'd have burnt out. So I think I'm going to order a couple spare motors to keep around just in case.

This was all in the last month. So you're not alone.

Almost forgot:

7) My hait figured out he could push his ceramic flower pot around, and almost broke his glass tank slamming it into the wall. So I put a large plastic ugly fish decoration in there. It had a couple small holes in it that I didn't think he could fit in.....He wedged himself in there and got stuck. I had to take him and the decoration out of the tank and get him out. He looks a bit beat up now. But should heal up in a few months.

Seeb, ur hait sounds like my kind of fish!!

On topic, my filter didnt turn back on, and with my busy schedule I didnt catch it in time. Lost 2 of my gar including my precious spotted :(.

He's my favorite I've had so far. But he wants to break his tank. If you know how an AC110 works, it's got an intake that goes over the top of the tank, and you can pull it up to take it off. I've had to take all of the extenders that go deep into the tank off of the intakes because that's where he spits sand into the filters. So there's just 1-2" of the intake in the water. And now he goes up and hits them. I swear, one of these days he's going to knock one of the intakes out, and then the filter really is going to burn up. I might need to get some suction cups or something to stick the intakes to the side of the tank so he can't bump them very far.

And sorry for your loss of your gar. That really sucks. Get a back up filter on that tank, or atleast run some sponge filters for back up bio. I've got 2 going on my Hait's tank so if he breaks 1, he's still ok.

Lots of bad stuff hapened this month after everything running very smoothly for the past year or so. Murpheys law I suppose.
