Hi Everyone,

I know this question may have been asked many times and it may be percieved as a stupid question but we hear all the time about some of the American cichlids being bad guys, Jags, Wolf, Red Devils. I don't know a great deal about African cichlids but what do you keepers regard as the African equivalent to the Red Devil, or the Jag etc in terms of aggression? Which one is the most powerful, aggressive, the real tough guy of the African Cichlids family?

Thanks

I second the emperor as top choice. but id say since ive kept an emperor that c. horei is a pretty beastly lil dude too.

I don't know much about other african species but I think Melanochromis chipokae is the most aggressive mbuna.

im not to sure of the spelling but the talipia buttifakori would be one of the most aggro u can get that is more suitable for a tank .. the emperor gets way to large....

+1.

Bumblebees (Ps. crabro) can also be big mean fish.

For large Malawi haps, Nimbochromis fuscotaeniatus can get pretty aggressive as well... more so than any other Nimbo or Tyranno ime.

For Tangs, I've heard some real horror stories about boops destroying everything else in the tank... not a big powerful cichlid, just ruthless.

Thing is you would need like a thousand gallon tank to keep a pair or more.

I have pretty much all the aggressive mbuna and a few of the assertive haps and find the Johanni and Auratus to be the nastiest when it comes to temper.

They might not be that large when compared to other africans but the Johannis can be outright nasty. That and they are lightening quick.
