What is the most difficult fish to keep alive?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Bc obviously we were refering to fish tanks......and u couldnt just say great white? Lol

They have been kept in captivity but not long....i believe 6 months might habe been the longest.
hey man, the name of the thread didn't specify lol I figured everyone knew the taxonomy on that one, it's a pretty easy one. If you have heard of a megalodon you should know what a carcharias is.

Yes, they have been kept in captivity for a brief period followed by disorientation, bumping the sides even in round tanks, then they eventually perished if not returned to the ocean. No one knows why this happens and it has been a mystery for over 30 years now

shad 1 public aquarium has gotten them to kinda work by using strong current to make them swim one way in a coleum tank but the develop ulcers and need to be switched out regularly.

I was draining water from the tank for a water change, when I made a call from another room. About 5 minutes into my call, I could hear my husband bringing and in stacking firewood in the living room. From the sounds, he must have brought in a lot of firewood. After talking 15 - 20 minutes, my call ended. I went into the living room and found my pacu unresponsive in a dry tank. It wasn't my husband stacking firewood, but the pacu flailing around in a dry tank that I had heard. Because the tank was drained dry, we could not pump water into the tank, and had to use buckets to dump water into the tank and get the fish in water again. After being out of water for 10 - 15 minutes, and flailing around (there was fish parts on the dry floor), both pacu made full recoveries. What a horrific thing. I apologized to them for weeks. Pacu are DEFINITELY not on the list for most difficult to keep alive. On the other hand, these long-lived fish (30+ years) live about two years and die suddenly in poor water conditions.

I'm going to add betta to my list. I've gone through 4 in under 2 years. The 1st one was nearly 1.5 years but died a week or two after moving from the bowl to the 10 gallon. The other 3 were all put in the 10 gallon. Out of the 4 the longest one lasted about 3-4 months in that tank.

5 year old threads are the hardest to keep alive. lol

Good to know I'm not the only one lol.

no, but seriously.....how in 7 pages did no one say Carcharodon carcharias? Possibly the only fish in the world that no one has been able to keep alive in captivity

gonnna add to the clown loach responses. Always croak at the first sign of any trace nitrates . I also have had problems with rope fish but I think mainly because they are fairly beaten up wild caught varieties. For some reason I have had no success with german rams too. Pacus are the toughest, fastest growing, tough sons of ***** fish on the planet!

When I had a SW tank, I tried twice with a green mandarin, never got either of them to eat, both died eventually

What did you try to feed them?....it's been my experience that they will only eat small live foods.
