I have put slate tiles as a bottom in my pleco tanks. There is alot of pleco guys that do there backgrounds in tile as well.

They do look really good, and they make good and quite cheap backgrounds and barebottoms that don't look bare.

Alot of people use tile for backgrounds or substrates.. great earthy look and still the functionality of bare-bottom..

each their own... most likely cheap way to put a black ground and bottom that is easier to clean...
