What is the smallest gar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have read them, just did again after you linked actually. :)

I tend to absorb the gar knowledge and not so much the non-gar knowledge. If it's not a gar then I've never really cared what it is. But knowledge is power, and it's good to know - so thanks. Now all those people who post their non-gars here to get ID'd can at least get a correct answer on top of their disappointment.

Now if you're talking about longnose gars that have been labeled "needlenose gars" as they are sometimes called, then you're in business for dealing with true gars.
I think hes not talking about the longnose, cuz longnose can grow up to 3' not 4''!

Actually "Needlenose gars", if not being used as a name for Longnosed, are Belonids. They are in there with Flying fish and Halfbeaks. Not a Characin at all...

Interesting. I always just assumed they were right there with the SA pike characins (spotted, marble line, etc).

Huh, I'm right there with you, Michael. Of course then, these pike characins are commonly mislabeled as "needlenose gars" which further adds to the confusion. :screwy:

True needlefish are indeed Belonids, though, as Richard pointed out.

I kind of figured that he was talking about the false gars, but you never know when it comes to the average LFS; they potentially could have a few small longnose gars labeled as "needlenose gars."
