thinking about a lungfish for a 80gal but will be upgrading to larger 125-180 gallon in a few years. what lungfish stays the smallest and mellowest? thanks.

The smallest lungfish species is Protopterus amphibius. Grows to about 18". But, good luck finding one. I had one over a decade ago. Have not even heard of another one available since then.

BTW, this is an african species. Meaning there's no such thing as mellow. African LFs have a tendency of ripping tankmates up.

The only LFs I've been able to comm are AULs and L. paradoxa.

yeah I figured I wouldn't find one that was "nice" but as long as they're not tearing up the tank and all other fish then I would be fine, I'm just considering a little bit bigger tank something in the 100-175 or so range maybe a 90 just bc its cheaper so I was looking at bigger fish!! but thanks for you're help

The thing with lungfish is that they could be fine for a period of time and then decide they want to rip everything in the tank to shreds. I keep my WAL alone, and I think that's really the best way imo.

oh good to know, I never knew that I've seen people keep them with cichlids but that may just be their experience with one lungfish and then they get a knew one and It rips everything up. thanks

I've seen people house them with cichlids before as well, all I'm saying is to not get too attached to anything you're putting in with it ;)

that would prob be smart, nothing expensive
