what is the truth about adding tap to tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I do it unless I'm using prime and while were on the subject.
I know ill prob get flammed for it but I'm going to say it anyways. I know of many people who don't use conditioner sometimes myself included. When I ran out of prime several several months ago I didn't use any until last week. I have also went long periods of time before that not using it. I even know many people not myself included that clean there filter pads and media under tap water without any ill effects. in all cases however the water was cold and was running.

i could potentiall get slammed for saying this as well, but i use tap water for my discus, granted i do age it overnight with discus buffer and a conditioner, however my lfs is hammering me to switch to R/O but i havnt had a single problem with tap, it is all i used with my africans and community tanks and then i didnt age it

I use tap in my freshwater tanks. In my 210, I change 150 gallons each week. I pump tap water directly into my sump. I put dechlorinator directly into the tank after the tap water is in there. Not a single issue and I've been doing this for over 3 years.

The answer I guess is how much chlorine and chloramine is in your tap water and how much undeclorinated tap water you are adding to your tank.

I have did water changes with Prime in the water before.
I have done water changes with Prime added after.
I have topped of a tank for weeks in a row with no Prime just TAP, keeping under the 10% theoretical limit.

I have never ever ever lost a fish doing this. I did however loss 2 tanks worth of fish when I feel asleep while doing a water change. I had the two tanks linked and would add tap water using a 1/4 line from the kitchen directly into the sump. Well since this line was small it would take a long time to refil the tank. I feel asleep and then forgot about it, so basically it filled for about 24 hours with just tap water. 100% causalities.

I think general rule of thumb is <=10% of total volume of water actually in the tank can be added without dechorination without any harm.
