I have been thinking about 1 of these for a while but can't find the name and have never seen 1. I'm thinking of trying to order 1 in but want to research them and I would also like your opinions on if it's compatible with the fish I have?

It's a 225g with to very large canister filters and a powerhead

Hoping to have a 8'x4'x3' in the next couple of years

Ph 7.2

Temp 80f

Tank mates will be

Giraffe cat
Motoro ray
TT eel
Clown loaches
ATF ( hydrocynus vittatus )
Possibly a pike (odoe) but that depends how well it gets on with the tiger...
And possibly another catfish in future, hopefully Leiarius Pictus.

That is a rather large PBB, a 225 would be fine and with tank mates of appropriate size you should have no problems in the beginning.

They are all to large to be eaten except a few of the loaches but I could keep the small ones in my growout.

Do you think there would be an issue with the eel? I know they don't tolerate other eels well but I'm guessing a bichir looks different enough?

Also, do you know an average growth rate? Just incase I do come across another cat that I really want, I don't want it getting eaten lol

Pbb do not grow fast depending on the environment I would say somewhat moderate growth rate. Not sure on the eel I have no real exp with it but I would assume only a matter of time till it becomes lunch. Most catfish are in the safe zone with polypterus as they tend to grow faster. I would look for a PBB if that's what you want in the 12-14 in range and go from there, if you are not familiar with polypterus in general look around the stickies there are a bunch of other types like Koliba, kiloton, and so on

I've heard bad things about mixing stingrays and bichirs, never tried it myself but I've heard the bichirs will bite the rays disc

Thanks, my eel is pretty big, it's about 13-14" and quite thick, he should grow to around 2' I am told so do you still think it would be in danger? I will check out some of the stickies :) I have had a Senegal and and endli in the past so I'm not a complete noob but don't know loads about them lol I will look into the other species as well but I really like the look of these ones, are they particularly rare?

What's the story with them and rays? I have seen a few vids of the 2 mixed on YouTube but that doesn't mean it lasted lol the last thing I want to do is put my ray in danger!

Exactly that, they bite on the rays disc, bichirs can also death roll (like an alligator) which if a decent sized one latched on to a rays disc and did that the damage would be pretty bad. Of course there are exceptions to all of the "bad mixes" of stock, it might work just fine. PBBs are for sure a larger bichir specie, and one of the more rare kinds. Never saw one locally, only vendor I've ever seen have them is Jurassic Aquatics. Kind of pricey too!
