What is this bichir?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Exactly that, they bite on the rays disc, bichirs can also death roll (like an alligator) which if a decent sized one latched on to a rays disc and did that the damage would be pretty bad. Of course there are exceptions to all of the "bad mixes" of stock, it might work just fine. PBBs are for sure a larger bichir specie, and one of the more rare kinds. Never saw one locally, only vendor I've ever seen have them is Jurassic Aquatics. Kind of pricey too!

I really don't want that to happen! Yea the death roll would mess it up big time :( If they are that rare then they will be even rarer in the uk, might not even be able to find 1

Oof didnt realize you were in the UK, i have no idea about the bichir market there. Id look for an importer who imports from the area of the Nile river, since that is where these are native

I can get nile perch and stuff like that so there is hope :) the only common bichir here is sennagals tho... I'm not sure if it's worth the risk to my ray tho :/ I'm gonna research the hell outa it and see how I feel after.

Thanks for your help :)

No problem, yeah if you can get nile perch the same importer may be able to get PBB. Idk if nile perch are farmed though, if they are then the fish are most likely coming from Asia not the native range

Toyin at rehoboth aquatics ships Worldwide I'm pretty sure. However I'd have to imagine not only would the fish be pricey, but the shipping would be pretty pricey to. It's for sure something you'd want to really want and commit to before you do it.

Thanks I will keep that in mind but i don't think I'm gonna get 1, I don't want to risk my ray getting mangled

I have a 28 inch black spotted eel in with two 20 inch ornates and they have lived peacefully together for years. No experience with rays but I do know clown loaches can be bad with bichirs. If the bichir is large enough to try to eat the loach it will end badly. Loaches have barbs that will lodge in the throat of the bichir and cause both fish to die. Had this happen in my tank 4-5 years ago. Tried to pull the dead loach out of the dead ornates mouth and it was jammed in good. If I did mix loaches and bichirs again I would be sure the loaches were huge. And maybe stay with a bichir that won't get big enough to try to eat em.
