I got this thing as a "raphael catfish" in a LFS here in MD last week. I know it is not a Raphael catfish. Somebody told me that it is a redtail catfish and it looks similar but it is not one. I thought that I looked like a hybrid redtail catfish with a tiger shovelnose but i was told it was not by another fish forum... It was not a big fish forum so they may be wrong...

that is an rtc x tsn, will be over 2ft in a year and grow on too 4ft+ very quickly... it will need a swimming pool sized home very quickly and will eat every fish you own bud.. you need to return it and ask for your money back, i wouldnt bother going back to the other fish forum either if they cant id one of the most common giant catfish available.

Chill bro! HaHa :) as I stated in my first post I THOUGHT it was a hybrid (when i purchased it) but the other forum said it was not. The other forum was not active either so I am quitting that one! Anyways like I said I THOUGHT it was a hybrid so I have already started thinking of housing solutions... Maybe a large indoor pond?300 gallon Stock tank will work for the first year. Im not going to lie. He is in a 30-40 gallon right now (i know it is way to small. But he is only 6 inches right now...) i will upgrade ASAP! He is a beast! He was eating the MOMENT i put him in!

A 300 gallon stock anything, won't be big enough after a year. It would be good for THIS year, but not next year.

Yes, You are correct. A potentially 4-5 foot fish needs much larger... I could figure something out in the year he is in there... Or just sell him if i can not.

Haha yeah its a rtc/tsn but i doubt it will ever get 5ft long in a person fish tank unless its in a huge aquarium, love when people over think and yeah do make sure you have a big tank though my friend as they do get very big and plump.

lol, not being funny mate just informative. you didnt know what it was now you suddenly want to try to house one... huh? if so just go straight for a 1500 gallon pond and be safe for a few years.

remember you have to pay all that money for heating,
water damage to ya house due to evaporation,
wont be able to see it properly in a stock pool,
pools are ugly anyway,
money to feed it will be huge,
money on water changes,

just a rich mans fish if you want my opinion, not worth keeping unless you have a tank along the lines of arapaimags multiple thousands of gallon or a nice outside pond in an area with adequate climate. even in a 2000g tank is cruel.

you wont be able too sell it when its 2 foot either, you would have too pay to shift it or kill it.

not shooting you down mate as i have done the whole rtc in a 180 thing and planned ponds that never materialised... would love for you too create a nice home for him... if you really plan to do it i would love to subscribe to a grow out thread if you are going to do one?
