What Is This Catfish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
lol, not being funny mate just informative. you didnt know what it was now you suddenly want to try to house one... huh? if so just go straight for a 1500 gallon pond and be safe for a few years.

remember you have to pay all that money for heating,
water damage to ya house due to evaporation,
wont be able to see it properly in a stock pool,
pools are ugly anyway,
money to feed it will be huge,
money on water changes,

just a rich mans fish if you want my opinion, not worth keeping unless you have a tank along the lines of arapaimags multiple thousands of gallon or a nice outside pond in an area with adequate climate. even in a 2000g tank is cruel.

you wont be able too sell it when its 2 foot either, you would have too pay to shift it or kill it.

not shooting you down mate as i have done the whole rtc in a 180 thing and planned ponds that never materialised... would love for you too create a nice home for him... if you really plan to do it i would love to subscribe to a grow out thread if you are going to do one?

No offense, my friend but I feel as though that is unrealistic... A 8x4 should hold it until it is 3' or so. Long term a 8x5. I do not see why it needs a 15' tank like some suggest. It would be reallu happy in there! But then again, I would be really happy in a Lamborghini. Maybe I could do a 10 foot tank... I will see. I am not new to this... Just letting you know. Catfish are my favorite fish. I have kept 100's of catfish before! And a few big cats before. Tiger shovelnose, large albino channel, sun catfish (10"), and ID sharks. Unfortunately my old 800 gallon plywood tank broke. And that was a few years ago... before I was "technology obsessed" so i have no pics. I REALLY wish I did for memories sake... But I smell a V2 coming soon! :D :D :D and I am posting s growout thread now!

I had to laugh - You include a 10 inch Sun Cat in your list of "big cats?" Get ready for a completely different beast. I wish you luck - but hope you make smart decisions from here on out. This fish will eat the cats you think are big, for snacks.

Red tail cats and tsn get big but not 5 feet. Maybe if you keep it in a huge pond for many years but realistically it wont exceed 4'. But an 8' long tank wont be good for a 4' fish.

Well. I mean, it is bigger then alot of the other cats I kept like synodontis, pictus, cories etc. I am going to 90% sell him though as of now... I am still going to keep it up until 8" or so... Maybe keep it a while longer if I find a cheap stock tank. But i probably will not house it for life. I am moving him to a 75 gallon this weekend... It is almost done cycling.

Thank you. I was not thinking when I posted that. I would say 10-12' would be fine though... At least in my opinion. You obviously also need to account for width.

Wise thinking. The 75 will be ok for a few months though, so I would continue to plan ahead. Building a pond is cheap.....

RTCxTSN hybrids commonly hit 2' in year one and 2.5'-3' in years 2-3. However, I have never seen them over 3.5' or even much over 3'. I'd be glad if someone showed me one with evidence.

I do believe that the ones with good genes will get to 4' but it will take a long time, perhaps 10-20 years. These fish have not been in the ornamental fish trade long enough to know yet - they became widely available under 10 years ago. People who do know (farmers that make them) do not come here. And even if there are such giants out there in the hobbyists' hands, they must be less than a handful.

Yes, i know it is cheap to build an indoor pond. I Think i will enjoy him while i can and decide in a few months wether i want to keep him long term or sell him. I have only had him a week. Im not feeding him steroids. I have a few months.
