What is this on the wood???

definitely slime mold did you boil the wood before you put it in the tank? spores could be trapped in the wood and grow over time even under water.

I poured boiling water over the wood and soaked it as well. It got scrubbed and scrubbed. But yeah it was not there when I had the plec in that tank coming to think of it. So the plec must have been keeping that under control.

I never get algae in my tanks though so don't like keeping plec as I end up needing to feed them wafers etc

It's been in the tank a year according to OP! Whatever it is just siphon it out and if you have a test kit you will know if its affecting your water!

Yep your pleco was always eating the fungus. Get another pleco

That would indicate the driftwood or wood wasn't 100% dead. There is obviously sap or something still in the wood! Did you buy this piece? If so is it Malaysian? Or did you find it?

I've have many old pieces I had for a long time. They been in and out of my tanks over the years. Sat stored outside over many summers then used in the tank again. Every time i put the in my tank without pleco present fungus will start to grow. Its just the wood decaying in the water. When its dry it doesn't decay. Malaysian wood and Mopani (African root) i've had fungus grow on it. And these pieces were 110% dead.
