Im pretty sure there was something in the water the day that happened. It was instant. The second the first bucket of fresh water hit the tank it went cloudy and things went bad from there.
I didnt clean the filter with that water change so I doubt any bacteria was affected in that way.
We were having a lot of water supply interruptions due to cracked main supply pipes at the time and the town council was welding the cracked cast iron pipes to repair the leaks.
I think they used a flux or something to get the welds to take. That is my theory anyway. possibly even some type of sulfur residue from the welds.
The water from my tap already contains high nitrates as well which does not help my siutation when doing water changes.
