What IS this thing???

Saw this fish on https://www.ornamentalfish.com.tw/product/taiwan-river-fish-export/

No idea what it is. Apparently native to Taiwan. Please help ID. Freshwater.

The face and fins remind me of a filefish, but to my knowledge there are no freshwater species.
Or perhaps some relative to sticklebacks and seahorses.

Arent file fish born in freshwater streams and rivers? Could've sworn they did the whole transition during the maturation process.

You may be right. (I may be crazy…)
Probably species dependent, I don’t know a lot on filefish besides the aptasia eating ones.

Looks SORT of similar, but upon further examination, a lot of things don't add up anatomically.

Also, I know it is not a baby filefish, as baby filefish look like this:

Think it’s a juvenile pseudotriacanthicus strigilifer.

Looks like a salt water fish. Or best case one of those brackish fish. Or born in fresh and slowly converts to brackish/salt

You may well be right... You can certainly see the resemblance.

Seems as though these fish rarely if ever enter fresh. The photo taken at the top must be a somewhat rare instance.
