I was helping a buddy clean out his pond. We caught all the turtles, but there was one he didn't know was there, and we have no idea what it is. How it got there, who knows(escaped pet?). So here is a pic.

Any ideas?

Big fan of the yellow-eared sliders. they don't get nearly enough respect.

You're on the right track Z. Looks like a Red-Bellied Turtle, Pseudemys rubriventris. They are native to the Eastern US.

There is not such thing;) You have yellow belly sliders Trachemys scripta scripta , cumberland sliders Trachemys scripta troosti and red ear sliders Trachemys scripta elegans:D And yes they deserve more respect;)

I'd have to agree that it's a red bellied cooter (their bellies are actually yellow with an orange tint. I have several, including one that was full grown when I got her in 1978.

well they sure do look better the your everyday RES.

Really? I still think it's a female Northern Red Belly. :p Look at how much red is on the scutes. And it's hard to tell from the photo but it's shell doesn't appear to be as domed as a Florida.

Well actualy it isnt hard to tell at all:D And thouse red scutes are a caracterist of florida red bellys. Also the domed shell wouldnt be noticed at this age, both species in hachlings can be as domed as sliders:confused::lol3:
