Here´s a adult female nelsoni in wich the red stripes are already faded:D

And here´s a young one:D The stripes can be brigth red, orange, greenish yellow or even barely noticeable thanks to melanism

And here is a true northern red belly Pseudemys rubriventris:D
These guys have a stunning red plastron with black spots, hence the name, and a much more uniform back, normaly lacking any noticeable stripes in adulthood and black in color;)
Nelsonis in comparison tend to have a orange belli that only turns redish in age or in certain morphotipes. Oddly florida red bellys in the average seldom have them:D

I guess you're right and I only have experience with Pseudemys rubriventris. But Northerns can have just as much red on their scutes as Florida Red Bellies. I didn't take notice to the plastral markings. You win this round cooter man.

Awesome. Thank you. So being a southern species, they probably couldn't overwinter outside in Washington(about 30-40 F), correct?
Rigth they like it warm all year:D

COOOL never saw one like that:eek: Man that´s one pretty turt:D It may have to do with subspecies (2 in the northerns) or hibrids. Wonder if there isnt some nelsoni blood in that one:confused: They should be able to cross quite easily and produce fertile offspring, after all they are so similar that they were once thougth to be subspecies of the same animal:D
