Hello MFK

I recently took in an archerfish that was a trade in at work. It was a sad little fellow but did eat crickets. I brought him home because I figured I could give him a better situation and no one had bought him. I was thought he was a micro dat and was able to positively ID him later on. I needed to make sure so I could try to give him the proper water conditions. He was already in bad shape when I got him, but he was eating. By the second day he stopped eating and just sat at the top of my QT tank. To make a long story short, by day 5 he still wasn't eating (even with food soaked in garlic guard) and had white fuzzy poop hanging from him. I haven't seen anything like this before, but it's obvious it's some sort of parasite so I did a w/c and dosed the tank with Prazipro. He pooped it completely out and he looked a little better but still didn't eat. By the next day he had some sort of white fuzz growing on his tail and his balance was off. Within an hour of his health taking a turn he was floating upsidedown at the bottom of the tank breathing heavily. I added some aquarium salt as a last ditch effort to try to bring him back. He died by the morning.

I'm unsure if there was really anything I could have done for him, but it bothers me that I wasn't able to do more. I've been able to bring back even the worst of fish from the dead and am known in my community for making fish thrive. I'm absolutely devastated I wasn't able to fix him in time and even more upset I don't know exactly what killed him. I can't find anything on this "fuzzy" poop or what parasite it could have been. I had my young pbass housed with him during this time and want to make sure he's not at risk, or frankly myself since I'm battling some immunity issues and occasionally have cut up hands. There have been zero symptoms from the pbass.

This fuzzy poop is really bizarre, when attached to him it was super fuzzy like a fungal infection. The next day there was a giant poop on the bottom of the tank. It looked overly big, was clear jelly and the only way to describe it was hollow (like how a long bead would be hollow so you can run a string through it) it was pretty gross.

Here's pic of some of the weird poops after I used prazipro

Here was one of the poops one of the two fish did right before the archerfish died. Almost like the poop came out moldy or immediately after

The weird poop an hour after prazipro.

Did I ever think I'd post about fish poop but yup...poop

I would treat it for hexameta and stick to crickets archers are bug eaters they are adapted to spit water at bugs to make them fall in the water to be eaten so my guess is he only eat that for a reason. They are also brackish water fish so stress from going to full freshwater could be an issue too.

it was eating crickets, it stopped eating them by day one. it was a small scale archer which is freshwater and it was living in a freshwater tank previously. my question mostly pertained to what parasite it was infected with before it died

It's diffacult to say for sure but it could be a segment from a tapeworm.

They move from fresh to brackish thru out its lifetime. I had a little one a while back and it died after a few weeks of being in full freshwater. I'm not sure if aquareno is right but maybe try treating it for hex with Epsom salt and see if there is any improvement in eating or atleast getting the fish to poop out the parasite.

the fish died about a week after bringing it home. there's nothing I can do now, but I wanted to know what it was 1) so I can be educated on what it was and be able to spot it/treat it in the future and 2) be able to know what it was so I know if my fish are at risk as well as the fish at work since that's where it came from. no one has seen this poop before but doomiedee I did look up more on hex and the poop did look similar. I'll look up the tapeworm info aquanero, but if it's anything like dog tapeworm, I don't believe it looked similar. I'm keeping an open mind to any possibilities

Like I said it is hard tell for sure. In the future Praziquantel or Levamisol can be used during QT as effective dewormers.

Yes, that is what it is.

Ok, I thought so. I definitely had Prazipro in there, but unfortunately I think it was too late before I picked it up. I'm unsure if there was really anything else I could have done but I wanted to see if you guys had any knowledge on what happened or if I could have done something differently. I had never seen poop like that before and not only wanted to gain knowledge in case I came across it again, but also in case it was something I should be alarmed about for my other fish sharing the tank. Not even my boss had seen poop like it before so I was stumped.
