What is this white growth on my driftwood?

This isn't a piece of wild driftwood. I bought it at a lfs 2 years ago, boiled it several times for 30min each time. It's been in the tank for 2 years with no white growth, so I'm surprised at this sudden pop up.
Right, but my point being I've used a number of different wood types that have grown different stuff on them-- even after boiling-- none of which have turned out harmful (yet), but I haven't seen that before.

That it's rigid makes me wonder if it's a lichen of some sort, some lichens do grow underwater, but not sure if that's what you have there. There are lichens that are toxic to ingest, whether they would release anything harmful into the water I don't know.

Calcium build up due to hard water? Might be fungus trapped under it with no aeration and grew. Whatever it is doesn't seem toxic so I would take it out scrape it out run some hot water on it and call it a day. Check every water change or every month to see if it's growing.

...so just to complete my previous thought-- it's not just what comes in on the wood, it's also what's in the air, your water, etc. and whether a particular piece of wood or tank provides what it needs to grow.
