I found this on one of my rbp's lower lips today while feeding them.

Is this an injury or just a discoloration or is this the beginning of mouth rot or something serious.
It doesn't look like a chunk is missing and it isn't sticking out at all.
Tried to get the best pic I could.

Hi Aly, nice metting u.

Sometimes while feeding, 2 reds try to bite the same piece of food and s one bites the lips of other causing wounds like your fish shows.

From my own point of view this is what has happened, so you just don't worry he'll heal very quickly, and if you want just add half handfull of salt to prevent infections.

Cheers.

my tank is 30 gal...how much salt exactly should I add? and should it be marine or aquarium salt I have both.

For 30 gal add one handfull of salt, aquarium salt will do, but if now you have marine salt available you can do it aswell, just add half handfull instead.

well whatever it is it is definitely not hindering his ability to eat...he devoured 2 sinking pellets that barely fit in his mouth in one bite one after the other...oinker!

I definitely agree that it it's a scrape. Make sure and check your water quality. Salt can help, but your params. have to be good in order for him to heal. Even if ammonia and nitrites are zero, make sure and keep nitrates very low (ten or so) to help him heal more quickly. IMO, you can spend money on meds, or you can do daily water changes. Both help heal; the latter is cheaper and better in the longrun. Also, and I'm sure you've checked into this, but make sure there's nothing sharp in the tank that could have caused the wound. Tankmates are most likely, but sometimes fishkeepers overlook the obvious. So I wanted to mention it. Good luck.

yea it should be fine.. one of mine had more than half of his bottom lip bit off a few months ago and now you cant even tell the lip was chopped

thanks! yeah tank is definitely fish safe nothing sharp...actually did a water test today nitrates and nitrites are reading at 0...I added some salt and i'll do some water changes...thank you both for all the help!
