I think those pics have been around for a while now.
Maybe someone dug it up and mass emailed them out and your aunt got them.
Pretty sure discovery channel had it.. but I saw some video footage of oarfish in the deep waters. they are pretty spectacular. I think it was only a juvi they caught on tape.. about 8' or so. But it was still very interesting.
OP it wouldn't surprize me if you aunt simply looked for picture of what was found , and not actually sent you picture of the fish found. and no doubt after the earthquake more underwater habitate was disturbed then we're aware of yet.
