What is this?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
either axolotl or some type of salamander larva, most likely axolotl

awesome! thank you. very cool creature! does anyone have one? can it co-exist with fish/inverts or turtles?

scratch that... they need water temp around 72 degrees at most. what a bummer, i was totally fascinated by it.

is there anything similar that enjoys slightly warmer temps and is also aquatic?

A lot of amphibians will eat fish and inverts, as will turtles, and turtles will eat the amphibian too, so cohabing most species is a bad idea. Your best bet are newts, firebellies, paddletails etc, although they lack the gills :) Keep them in a species-only tank to avoid problems.

Best,
Paul

Sirens do fine in warm water and are interesting captives. They are similar to axolotls but lack hind legs and have a more elongate, eel-like shape. There are four currently recognized species; the two Pseudobranchus species are usually under 6" long, Siren intermedia is typically 10-14", and Siren lacertina is one of the world's largest amphibians, sometimes growing to over 3 feet in length. There are several recent threads on them in this forum discussing care and tankmates. They are only sporadically available, but you will find some eventually if you keep your eye on the classifieds.
