The white stuff on your rock more than likely is the calcified skeleton of dead coraline algae. Most ppl wire brush it off before the curing process.

Best way to do water changes - I'm sure theirs a ton of them. I have a w/c tank with heater + powerheads and an ro/di unit. I fill up the tank with RO add salt let run for 24 hours to stabilze ph and temp - test and add til 1.026 - waters ready. I have a utilty pump in the basement that pulls 10% of the main tanks water weekly to the drain and a mag drive 7 pump that fills the main - I HATE buckets, too labor intesive for me.
 
It's only a 26 so I don't have all the bells and whistles. (pipes and drains) and the smallest drum of ro I found was 50 of which I think it would take forever for me use. So would the bucket thing be better for me? I'm just trying to avoid taking out all the sand.

Why would you take out the sand? I've got a 55 and do either weekly or biweekly 10% changes. I use a 5 gal bucket that I just mix to a sg of 1.023 and dump it in. I've learned that when it warms up, the sg is right where it needs to be. I was using ro water before I learned we're on a well. It's nothing to be intimidated by.

You need a new LFS... nothing wrong with coraline... except that you have to scrape it off the glass every so often (usually not that hard to do).
 
Damn. I learned a lot from that place. (about freshwater anyway). I feel real stupid now. Guess its time to read the freshwater posts too now. Althought my fw tanks have been great.
