What is this?

No, the wasp's sting can't kill a cow. The name derivation is most likely rooted in the intensity of the sting on humans. I.E: "Yeow, that hurts so bad it could kill a cow".

See the 4th post MFK'r!

Merely giving my opinion as well. Just happened to be the same as a very knowledgeable person on here. I researched these crazy looking things when I saw one a couple years ago. Sorry for trying to help. ;).

Agreed, while I have no first hand experiance "thank God" I've heard it's one of the most painful stings you can get and makes you wish you were dead, for a while anyway. I never saw one in Jersey but according to Madmaxx and Wiki they are here. That sucks!

i'm willing to test their sting if someone is willing to supply the specimen

haha you're nuts.

thanks, Is Your pic from the states? do they live underground? do they at one point have wings?

Yeah, I spotted this one in Southern NJ. I had the same reaction as you, snapped a pic and went back to get a bottle (my one friend collects insects religiously) but it was gone. Then my friend told me the price I almost paid for his hobby. :WHOA:

Yeah, I've only seen it once and I spent most of my life here and outside.
