These popped up a few days ago. They are about 2mm long and most of them are just along the top of the waterline. Every now and then I see one swimming around. I asked the local saltwater store what they were but he had no idea so can anyone help to id these?

i would guess these are some sort of pupae for some kind of arthropod.
is you set up new or did you add anything recently?

they look like the flies that live in salt lakes. Never heard of anyone having them in a tank. You would see these things in dry lake beds or like i said salt lakes, very interesting

Never seen anything like it. Bump for more info!

The tank is fairly new, about 2 months. I did not notice them until a month after I added the live rock. I hope it is not what turbo thought it was because that would be really hard to get rid of in my tank. Thanks for all of the help, I will keep an eye out for what this really is.

smiley my dad has set up a new marine tank about 1 11/2months ago and we have these i caught 1 with a turkey baster, what did you catch them with and i think they are a cirolaid, they are bad the suck on fish, i have searched this for my dad and one way to get rid of the is to get a big bodied colourful fish like a yellow tang and at night the little things grap it then you take the tang out and flick them off and do again untill all gone.
heres the link for this method.http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2002-05/rs/index.php it is also good for id these bugs

dang i have had those in my tank before and just dismissed them as something that managed to get in the tank...dang. will they effect an eel?
