What is wrong with my Discus's eye????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you search the ray forum threads you will find some people suggest Melafix is ok for use with rays, while others say it is of limited benefit and can cause irrritation to rays.

Most people do recommend using salt with rays but I'm not sure whether discus like it!

IMO, daily large water changes is the best option as it's quite likely that inadequate water quality is at the root of the problem. Failing that, if you feel meds are necessary it would be easier all round if you could quarantine the affected fish in a smaller seperate tank for treatment. If you're concerned there's an underlying infection then a broad spectrum antibiotic may be of benefit.

Good luck

ok well I started to panic cause no one was replying so I dosed Maracyn-TC after reading about it. It says to dose once a day for 5 days. Should I continue to dose and do a water changes or quit dosing and do 50% water changed every day?

How many replies do you need? We've already told you it'd be best to do daily water changes until it clears up.

Well, this forum has tons of discus owners an I have always got more than one or two opinions and I feel much better to not just trust the first person who tells me something and plus I had bought the medication after posting the thread with no replies. I have read a lot about popeye and half says to do a water change and half says to dose the tank. I just tested my water the other day and my ammonia was zero, so I did both a water change and meds. I have just has these fish for so long and have never had any problems so sorry if I freak out a little.

I've seen other ray keepers comment that maracyn is ok with rays so shouldn't be any problems there.

Tetracycline (maracyn TC) is broad spectrum antibiotic so may well help with the discus eye problem.

Once you start treatment with an antibiotic it is best to complete the course to prevent re-occurrence and possible development of resistance.

You could probably still do daily water changes during the treatment, just do them immediately prior to adding the next daily dose of antibiotic, which obviously should be done at the same time each day.

Thank You, that is what I have been doing so hopefully it works.
