What is your experience with fire eels and rays?

I have a piece of pvc that the fire eel is hanging out in.. I catch him at night coming out but with the lights on he's not too active yet. I want to take the pvc out but I don't want to stress him out .
Ps. This guy was my buddy, I never fed him but he always hung out with me when I stayed on that chair.

I added a 2 inch PVC for mine. After i added it he stopped burrowing in the substrate (great cause he was messing up my plants!). I cut it 3 feet long so i could kinda measure him.
Only issue is he is too fat! Now i gotta look for a 3 inch pipe.
Always give them a pipe or cover, it would be stressful without. My one used to always come out when I came in the room as it wanted feeding...all the time.
