What is your experience with Salvini Cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, I know they are pretty aggressive fish. I was thinking of adding one in a 90 gallon with a GT and (2) Jaguar Catfish. Im trying to get a wide 90 gallon though. Just hoping with a tank this size the fish might be on the mellow side if given adequate space.

I have always had a sal in my Sa/Ca community tank never a problem until they decide to breed but that holds true for any cichlid you should have no issues

I've never had any problems with having multiple females in the same tank, providing there wasn't a male present. If there is more than one male there will not be for long. A breeding pair will more than handle larger fish and make short work of similar size or smaller fish. Their ability to quickly damage larger fish should not be underestimated. With considering all that I love salvinis, one of my favorites.

I have a 65 gal tank with 4 sals, 2 bellycrawler pikes, a galaxy pleco and 5 giant danios.

Two of the sals have paired up (One of the others is a female, not sure on the sex of the 4th one...sometimes looks very female, other times very male) and spawn every week or two. They have yet to actually raise a brood, but they sure try.

Even with the pair doing their thing regularly the tank is very peaceful. The breeding pair will chase the other two sals if they get too close to the breeding area, but no damage. My female bellycrawler pike rules that tank...she goes where she wants, when she wants. Again, though, no bloodshed. Fights between the sals and the pikes consist of flaring and open mouth displays.

Nobody pays any attention whatsoever to the danios or the pleco.

Woah that salvini is gorgeous for her size!

I was just wondering if that was a Tabasco-grijalva salvini cichlid which I heard look better than the standard salvinis. (according to imperial tropicals)

Def keep us updated with her growth!
I have no clue which type she is XD but she is pretty (bad photo, will take another one)image.jpg

Also, I see you're mixing CA cichlids and African cichlids. Keep us posted on how that's going. It's been going well for me personally so I want to see if it's working for others.
It’s been going very well for me, the occasional “kissing fight” but really aggression wise they keep it between themselves (2 convicts), and the African cichlids don’t bother them at all, and sally the salvini only kicks them out of the caves
