I own CA/SA cichlids, but like to hear the theories on each method(s) and why.

I feed my fish twice per day without fail. Why? Because thats what "I" assume to be "healthy" for them. I do not fast them at all, but am wondering if I need to start doing so.

I know a lot of keepers have different feeding schedules and a lot of keepers have fasting schedules as well.

Moreover than to hear what your feeding/fasting schedule is (species included), please note theory or reasoning behind it.

The goal of this question is NOT to judge each others regimens, but to learn and understand. Thanks in advance!

CA/SA stock:

On my display tank I feed once a day, around 8:30 at night.

On my grow out tanks I feed either once or twice a day, depending on how the fish are acting when I get home from work. If they are begging like they are hungry then I throw a little food in, if not, then I just feed them like normal around 8:30.

The once a day feedings started once my stock was moved over from their growouts to my display tank. My theory on this is simple: less food = less mess. All the fish seem happy and none of them have sunken bellies or anything else that would suggest that they are not eating enough.

I do not fast my fish unless my wife and I stay out for the night when we are not planning to and I'm just not there to feed (doesn't happen often).

A hungry fish is a healthy fish. In the wild they don't eat regularly so fasting might do them some good. I fast my fish every few months for a few days at a time. NP here.

+1

Over feeding is the #1 cause of death in captive fish, my piranhas are fed 1x per week! The older the fish the less frequency of feedings required.

All depends on what im feeding.. general rule is if its a long lived species 10+ yrs or more the first year i essentially free feed.. ie i feed a little every time i walk past the tank. i don't fast my young fish more then 24 hours intentionally ( if were gone for the weekend ect i dont worry ) generally i feed my adult fish daily, and fast on the weekends. I generally don't worry about my fish on vacations ect. my spiny eels and now rays are fed alot.. i feed to satiation daily. My fish miss meals fairly regularly.. and i don't have a set feeding schedule. I find when i put them on a set schedule they becomes " obsessed" with feeding time and my tanks overall aggresion increases.

I haven't owned cichlids for a few years now. but i fed my juvies 1-2times a day and adults once a day and skipped days fairly regularly.

I feed mine once a day and twice on the the weekends cause of my work schedule

Would fasting, regardless of how many days, successive or not - beneficial for juvenile fish (< 1 year old)?

I found it does increase my catfishs growth.. but they tend to be binge/fasters by nature. imo in the end Good quality food trumps any food regime. getting the right balance of nutrients is key to optimal health/growth.
