I'm not sure what you mean by that. How are they boring? They are more active than a lot of fish and do the same things most fish do.
Okay...maybe boring wasn't the most accurate word. I meant it as droll, humdrum, commonplace, not so much describing their behavior. I agree they can have just as much personality as any other fish (another issue within itself in regards to anthromorphizing).
They basically hybrids, or in the very least, genetically-altered. There's no such thing as a "wild" oranda or ryukin goldfish. They're basically a domesticated fish, the aquarium equivalent of a cow. If I were making a zoo, I want giraffes and rhinos and ostriches and zebras. I don't want a petting zoo filled with goats and cows and sheep. Catch my meaning? I'm not saying there's not any beautiful-looking comets or koi out there, there certainly are...but they're all still created in a lab somewhere. There's some video floating around about training your goldfish to do tricks and stuff and people go on about what an achievement it is. Of course, nevermind the goldfish are the easiest to do that kinda stuff since they're all tank-raised and are dependant on people feeding/caring for them from day 1.
are you referring to all of the fancy ones? because if you are, they are not cheap. and they might be cheap just because they have been popular for a long long time.
I suppose that depends on the petstore or distributer. I'm aware some of the koi can fetch hundreds of dollars, and some of the fancies can upwards of $20....but they all still cows to me. (see previous comments)
what if your current favorite fish just started becoming the newest favorite fish, more were sold, prices dropped, and cost as much as goldfish do now? would you stop liking that fish just because of its price?
In a word...yes. That's how I am with this hobby (and reptiles, too actually). If everyone has it, I don't want it. I want something different. On a similar note, I used to like neon tetras, but now I have no interest in them since they're so in demand. I hate to say it, but if black phantom tetras suddenly became popular and everyone started getting them, I'd lose my interest in them as well. While true, some of the fish that do appeal to me may not be as pricey as a $30 oranda, the fact that not many people keep them or they're really odd-looking whatever makes up for it.
If you took the entire fish-keeping hobby as a whole, you'd probably find that in most home tanks, people keep goldfish, neons, mollies, platies, angels, and your plain-jane plecos. Not everyone keeps African butterfly fish, or cichlids, knifefish, etc...that's why MFK is so popular.
i just don't follow how someone with a relatively innactive fish like a pleco can put down goldfish as boring.
I already commented on what I meant as boring. My pleco doesn't have to swim in circles all day and beg for food to interest me. Him behaving how nature intended is plenty interesting to me.
Like I said before, I'll admit there are some eye-catching goldfish out there. But all those fancy varieties were still genetically-engineered from some dull-looking grass carp however long ago in a lab somewhere. I just like things natural, at least as much as possible anyway.
