What killed my aro?

i would say the betta killed it
i used to have a female betta with my fish, i kept getting dead fish until i finally saw her fill one

I highly doubt the betta took the aro down. They are usually pretty peaceful unless males are mixed. And if the betta did kill it, I doubt it would take a chunk out of it's abdomen. That's why I suggest the polypterus. They prolly killed it and then ate some of it.
