What kind of algae eater can/should I get for my goldfish tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well looked after Comets can get over a foot long, I know they are probably small now but they grow surprisingly large.

In this size tank the only suitable algae eater would be snails/shrimp and maybe otocinclus. I would not add shrimps or otos though. Nerite snails are probably your best bet.

In case you don't already know you'll want a 75g+ (preferably a pond) for them. The fancies I believe you want 20g for the first and 10g for each additional. Not trying to bash you or anything.

I've kept comets before and they've gotten up to about 8 inches. Surprised me, mostly because I was 10 when I got the fish, because of the next few years it just kept getting bigger. I was under the notion that it was just a feeder and wouldn't get too much bigger. I'm 23 now and would probably still have that fish if my mom didn't make me break down my tank.

The 10 gallon is just to see how my nephew does with the tank. He is 4 after all. I have a 120 that I am going to eventually set up for him.

I'm glad to here they have somewhere bigger to go. But as far as tank cleaners in a 10 gallon. I would do what's been stated with nerites. They say a rule of thumb is 1 per 10 gallons but it depends on the fish in there. I would get 2 or 3 and your tank will stay pristine.

Yeah, the 10 gallon is temporary. Essentially it is a grow tank because I don't want to put itty bitty fish in a 120. I don't want to risk stressing them out. But, probably in the next couple months the 120 will be set up. Haven't decided if I want to make it a planted tank or not.

Glad to hear they have a bigger home to go to. I can imagine how big your nephew's eyes will get when/if he sees that tank :P
Are you going to move the fancies into it as well? They are usually outcompeted for food by the streamlined goldies like comets.

I always prefer planted tanks. I imagine anubias would work well with them.

I plan on keeping both the fancys and comets together. There will eventually be more fancys than comets. I also want more than just fancys and comets. No kois though. Any suggestions? And I would like to take the planted tank route, but I will have to do more research on the care of a planted tank. Remember that this is going to be for a 4 year old and I'm not always over at his house. More likely than not, i will just use a sand substrate with some rock caves.

I have no idea as I don't keep goldies. My friend does though..she said maybe anubias and java fern because the comets are really not plant friendly.

I still really encourage seperating them but it is your/your nephew's tank. Hope it goes well.
