what kind of bichir?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have one of those Bichirs. I could be mistaken but I believe it is a Polypterus Senegulas.

1st 2 look like sens, and the last one appears to be lower jaw, but I'm not sure. It's hard to tell with the lighting.

ya i thought they were senegals but wanted to be sure. that might be what i put in my set up instead of the endli's everyone suggested. whats the difference in the two?

sens are smaller. they usually grow to about 12 inches. i have 2. one has grown to about 7 inches and is as fat as the average hotdog. the other is about 4 inches and was purchased from petsmart.

The first two you see are sens, then a darker green one appears which is a Polypterus retropinnis.

Note the difference in where the dorsal finlets begin along the body, on the retro they start further back.

sens are smaller then endli's? Yes.

what size to endli's get to? Captive bred anywhere from 20-30", Wild caught about 30-36", expect about 28".

sens are 12"? Some might get there might not.

price wise typically is there any difference in them? Here in the "states" you can find senes for about $8, endlis anywhere from $40-75.

personailty wise? Endlis are one of the more laid back types that just lay around the bottom and senes are considered to have the most personality constantlly swimming all over the tank.

feeding wise? They eat the same. Majority of wild caught specimens are found to have a stomach full of talapia. I feed mine raw shrimp, cut tilapia fillets and Hikari Massivore Delight sinking pellets.

or if you have any info on my other options let me know.
What are your other options?
