What kind of bulbs would be best?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
from what I could tell, they don't make led's that I can afford that are good for plant growth
I know you can dye some stuff but I'm terrible with technology and wiring lol
I'm just going to stick with what I've said before, and ask the company I'm getting this light from what the difference is between 6500K and plant grow

I already have the things that I mentioned in my first post
the crinums are in my tank already, they are holding in but due to poor lighting all they are doing is holding in
I don't mind the thickness of Jungle Val either :P, but I might play around and see what I like
I got 4 pretty big pieces of wood, one of them is already being colonized by some anubias that isn't doing half bad (but I will shade them with other plants when the high lights begin)
the other pieces of wood I have will hopefully be covered in the windelov java fern I have and I was considering trying some sort of fancy moss (I have java moss in another tank but I want to see what else I can get)
if the moss doesn't work I might just cover the bottom of the wood with regular java fern that I have laying around
what are the roots on dwarf hair grass like though? I've always been curious
I might also tie some riccia down to a few rocks in the tank when i get the chance

i just had a thought, not sure what I will do though
I'm thinking of maybe using Cyperus Helferi instead of Jungle Val, but if I do Jungle Val I'd want to try some of that redder kind I've heard of anyways
the choices the choices :P
I was also half debating using E. Angustifolia Vesuvius
I can guarantee though that when I'm done with this that the tank will be super planted :D

Everyone wants to throw LED's into the mix-For good lighting either DIY or store bought they will need your liver and kidneys as a deposit. Screw LED's for now, yes they will come down and perform for planted tanks JUST not now.

Cyperus Helferi - LONG transition time as well, grown emersed. I had 2 of these, and they as well require high light. I loved the look of them as well.

The wonderful thing about mosses in HIGH light is they actually over time ATTACH to the wood therefore allowing you to remove the needle thread and MOVE the moss that hasnt attached yet to another part of the wood.

I would really love to see how this setup handles not having co2 with such lighting. sending you a PM

If I start running into problems without the co2 I'll be getting that when I can lol
but mosses in low light attach as well, I do have a planted 10 that is pretty low tech (just a 19 watt florescent bulb) that has some java moss stuck to the wood (though I'm too lazy to actually take the time to take the wood out and fully tie down the whole thing with moss)
I can live with just waiting for the few strands towards the bottom to grow out and spread lol

how'd the Cyperus do with spreading runners and such? I'm not fully sure if it can be used in a similar manner as to how one uses Jungle Val, though perhaps I'd simply just mix and match

btw, I'm almost willing to bet that the moment I get some nice moss growth that either my rainbows or my pleco will decide to ruin my fun lol
funny thing is though that he's not any kind of fancy pleco, just a normal hypostomus sp. that's gotten to be about 7" long and has been staying at that size

My Cyperus never ran...ended up dying. Which was fine with me, again like the Crium they need flow pointing at them as well to keep the BBA off.
