Plumber's tape works wonders on keeping the threads from leaking IME!

Exactly, you be surprised the amount of people who simply don't know that have to do this with every threaded fitting used to carry water.

Well, this is not 100% correct.
This is plumbers tape:

Sometimes just using teflon tape

doesen't solve a minute leak so I use a thin coat of pipe thread compound

after wrapping a couple of layers of tape around the male threads.
Also you want to wrap the tape in such a way that it becomes more tightly wrapped as you tighten the fitting. $.02
