im a few click away in getting my first canister filter, and i dont want to make a big mistake so im asking you guys for opinions. i currently have 30 gal tank with a struggling penguin (i dont know the model) bio wheel filter. i want to get a canister filter that i could use in the future when i upgrade to a much bigger tank (80-120ish) but for now im stuck with a 30. id prob build a DIY wet/dry filter too and i might use the canister filter in the W/D as well.

so im looking at ehiem 2217 right now, which cost $199 at bigal's. is there anything else good, cheap and reliable out there?? i want something that wont empty my pocket and also a good investment for my fish tank

my fish is kinda hardy so it really wont mind the fast flow of water

Get an eheim off of Amazon. That's where I got mine, and even after shipping, it was still like $50 less than from any store, or any other website for that matter. Also, I think its Pet Solutions that sells them through Amazon, so it's a new product as well.

cool, yea i might check amazon out. hey i found this guy selling his ehiem 2229 ehiem W/D canister filter. what do you think about buying used ones??? and what do you think about the filter in gen?

buying a used eheim shouldnt be an issue, they last forever check the seals for cracks etc and the canister body.. the impellor is the only thing that may go wrong so check that and the ceramic shaft is brittle if handled roughly.. the 2229 wet dry is superb for bio filtration since that s what it was designed for, but its useless for mech and chemical

ok he's selling the eheim 2229 for 150 each. ive never seen a canister filter EVER so i dont know whats gonna be wrong with it by just looking at it. OMG my head is on a big debate right now haha. i need to make up my mind cause bigal's free shipping promo end tommorow lol

anymore comments?

so its basically eheim 2217(new) vs eheim 2229(used)

will be used in a 30 gal for now, and upgrade to a 80-90gal in the future. it would be the ONLY filter in the tank, nothing else.

If you were prepared to spend $199 on a 2217, you can easily find an Eheim Pro-II 2026 for that price online (with media). Hands down the best class of canister available!

I would strongly disagree there. The Classic line is a work horse, and much more reliable than the pro 2 filters.
